Remembering Balbir.
Balbir Kaur Rehal began her life’s journey on September 24th,1948 in Nairobi, Kenya.
She was born to Tara Singh and Swaran Kaur Kundi and grew up with six brothers, three sisters, and her grandfather. She loved her childhood and really enjoyed math, even though the focus for girls at the time was the household. She would also secretly read punjabi novels, while pretending to do school work :)
At the age of 20, she married Gurmail Singh Rehal, who would become the love of her life and her best friend. She loved him as dearly as he loves her. After one year in Kenya, and one year in England, they moved to the United States and raised their two children, Bittu and Dolly.
Balbir was a woman who was grateful: for her husband, her children and grandchildren, friends and her sixty nine years. After her first heart surgery in 1990, she considered every day after a blessing. She had 27 extra years of blessings, and as did we all.
Her family and friends were the light of her life, and she let us all know it until the end.
A stronger and braver person would be hard to find. She had struggled through decades of health challenges and never once complained. She taught us all how to fight. She gave us strength and she gave us might.
While we know that she is at peace and that her struggles are at an end, there is pain and sadness. But even though she is gone, she has left the legacy of her love and perseverance.
It’s hard to say goodbye.
Balbir was only 69 when she passed away on Thursday, December 7th, 2017.
