Delphina Carmen Gonzales

December 24, 1922 ~ September 29, 2017 (age 94) 94 Years Old
Delphina “Carmen” Gonzales, a lifelong resident of Tracy, passed away on September 29, 2017, in Tracy at the age of 94. She was born on December 24, 1922 in Tracy to Felipa and Cayatano Morua. She is preceded in death by her husband of 74 ½ years, Manuel Gonzales.

Carmen was born and raised in Tracy, CA and lived here all of her 94 years. She was baptized at St. Bernard’s Church as Delphina Carmen Morua but did not know this for the first 85 years of life as she grew up believing she was Carmen Delphina Morua. Her parents and seven siblings lived near the railroad tracks on Fourth Street, where her father worked.

She loved to sing in church, at school, with family, and while cleaning house. Her faith was very important to her, as was going to mass, saying the rosary and countless novenas to St. Jude. Carmen married her next door sweetheart, Manuel Gonzales, in April of 1942 during WWII. Three months after marrying Manuel, he needed to leave to fight in the war. Their first child “Lena” was born during the war, and they had six more children: Manuel, Phil, Andy, Rebecca, Mike and Stephanie, after Manuel returned in 1945.

Carmen took motherhood seriously, and was extremely devoted to raising her seven children. She was the ultimate caregiver. Besides taking care of her own children, she would babysit for hundreds of others whether it was family or just friends. The house was always filled with children.

She was super witty, and was always quick with a comeback! Carmen loved cooking and baking, and was known for her Lemon meringue pies and making tamales. She was so well known for her tamales that she was called the “Tamale Queen”!

Carmen once said that the best time of her life was when Manuel retired and they could go anywhere at any time. Carmen and Manuel loved to gamble, travel, and take drives to see where they would end up.

Carmen is survived by her seven children, ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and her 3 great-great-grandchildren. Her children and their spouses: Helen Wisby and her husband Luther, of Stockton, CA; Manuel Gonzales and his wife Charlene, of Gardnerville, NV; Phil Gonzales and his wife Elva, of Stockton, CA; Andy Gonzales of Valley Springs, CA; Rebecca Fern and her husband Paul, of Tracy, CA; Mike Gonzales and his wife Jeanne, of San Jose, CA; and Stephanie Hart and her husband Jeff, of Tracy, CA. Her Grandchildren, Helen “Snookie” Brown of Milford, OH; Steven Wisby of Stockton, CA; Kacie Martinez of Newark, CA; Danielle Gonzales of Fremont, CA; Samantha Pricer of Fremont, CA; Nate Gonzales of Huntsville, AL; Allie Fern of Sonoma, CA; Chris Hart of Riverbank, CA; Shawn Hart of Tracy, CA; and Angela Hart of Long Beach, CA.

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 16, from 3:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Fry Memorial Chapel with a Rosary at 7:00 P.M. Mass will be Tuesday, October 17 at 11:30 A.M. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church with burial to follow at the Tracy Public Cemetery.
