Opal G. Stroup

September 20, 1926 ~ March 6, 2017 (age 90) 90 Years Old
Opal G. Stroup departed this life and reached the arms of God on Monday, March 6, 2017. She was born Opal Colvard on September 20, 1926 in Panola, Oklahoma and was the youngest of 10 children. Raised on a farm in Eastern Oklahoma during the depression, she developed a respect for hard work and the dignity of those in need. These were values that she carried with her throughout her life.

Opal met her one true love, Lloyd Stroup, in Red Oak, Oklahoma in 1941 and the two were married on March 14, 1942. Soon thereafter, Lloyd was drafted into the US Army and deployed to the South Pacific while Opal moved to Tracy with his parents and faithfully awaited his return. During these war years, she worked with the wives of other deployed soldiers at the Tracy Quartermaster, later known as the Tracy Defense Depot.

Upon Lloyd’s return from the war, the two settled in Tracy where they raised their family and remained for most of their lives. They became active members of St. Bernard Catholic Church and were committed to the practice of their faith throughout their lives.

In her early forties, Opal enrolled in college and earned her teaching credential from Cal State Hayward, graduating with honors. She went on to teach elementary school in the Tracy School District for many years and later at St. Bernard Catholic School. She was a dedicated teacher and is remembered fondly by many of her students.

Opal was a woman of enduring faith in God and valued family above all in life. She possessed a generosity of spirit that made those around her feel valued and appreciated. She was accomplished, yet unpretentious. Her larger than life presence and homespun charm will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years Lloyd Stroup and their oldest son James L. Stroup (Arma). She is survived by her daughter, Tamara Vasquez of Elk Grove, CA, Kevin Stroup (Sharon) of Keys, CA, Craig Stroup (Kimberly) of Tracy, CA, Paul Stroup of Rosemead, CA and Mark Stroup (Jennifer) of Tracy, CA.

She was the matriarch of the Stroup family and was blessed with 24 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Her life and legacy will live on within the family forever.

A Rosary will be held for Opal at Fry Memorial Chapel on Monday, March 13, 2017 at 7:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow in her honor at St. Bernard Catholic Church on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at 10:30 am. She will be laid to rest at the Tracy Public Cemetery.

The Stroup family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated and caring staff at Astoria Garden Memory Care. We would also like to thank the many friends who assisted us in so many ways, we shall be forever grateful for your kindness and thoughtfulness.
