Cleo Mildred Clayton Thornton Cue, born November 14, 1919, in Chadron, Nebraska, passed away on September 26, 2017, in Elk Grove, California. Cleo was the fourth of five children born to Guy and Mary Clayton and was a descendant of pioneers in western Nebraska and South Dakota. Cleo attended school at Assumption Academy in Chadron, Nebraska, and graduated in 1941 from St. Catherine’s School of Nursing in Omaha.
She entered the Women’s Army Corps as a second lieutenant in 1942.
Cleo lived a life of adventure and traveled throughout Europe and Canada. She will be remembered as a strong and independent woman who was ahead of her time.
A renowned artist and seamstress, she was well known for her intricate egg artistry and miniaturist creations.
Cleo worked as a registered nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Stockton, Heinz in Tracy, and Defense Depot Tracy, where she retired with 21 years of dedicated service in 1986.
She is survived by her daughters, Wendy Rockey (Mike) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Pamela Langston of Stockton, California, Melanie Martin of Elk Grove, California, Patricia Cue of Homer, Alaska, Stephanie Cue Lopez of Ripon, California; and her son, Timothy Cue of Stockton, California. She was preceded in death by her first husband, William Thornton, who died during World War II, and her second husband, Leslie Cue, who died in 1977. Cleo is survived by 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at Saint
Bernard’s Catholic Church on Monday, October 2, 2017, at 10:30 AM. Cleo’s interment will be at Tracy Cemetery following services.
A celebration of life with family and friends will be held at the
Tracy Inn at 1:00 PM.
