On April 13, 1935, the world was truly blessed when Diana Mabini Cordero Boongaling was born in Fort Stotsenberg, Pamapanga. Her father was Ciriaco O. Cordero, a captain in the U.S. Army and her mother was Luisa Mabini S. Cordero. She always spoke fondly of her childhood with her four siblings: Virgilio, Rodolfo, Consuelo, and Nenita. Diana spoke vividly of her time during WWII. The bombing of Pearl Harbor rattled the table after lunch. The blaring sirens sent waves of shock and despair all throughout as her father and brothers hurriedly dressed in uniform. They kissed everyone goodbye as tears streamed down their faces. Diana along with her mother and sisters were evacuated in rafts with oars made of bamboo. They transferred to many different cities during this time. Diana and her sisters kept themselves busy by picking shells and fishes from the river. She spoke of the different people she met during this time—some were kind, giving them rice, pigs, and chickens for food! Once the war ended in 1945, they transferred to Paltoc St., Santa Mesa where they built their new home. Just a few days prior to Diana and Nenita’s high school graduation, their mother Luisa succumbed to throat cancer. Nenita and their father moved to San Francisco where she studied Nursing. Ciriaco later passed away in his sleep on January 21, 1958. During this time Diana continued her studies at the University of Santo Tomas for the Science of Teaching for two years. She later switched her major the Science of Home Economics and graduated in October of 1958. Afterwards, she met a “Batangueno” named Aproniano M. Boongaling (Jun)—describing him as tall, smart, handsome, and confident. They fell in love and later married on October 1, 1960 at Santa Cruz Church. They had their reception at Moonlit Terrace where they were surrounded with the love of their 300 guests. Diana and Jun celebrated their honeymoon at Pines Hotel in Baguio City for 5 days. Their love continued to grow with the births of their 5 beautiful children: Arnold, Arlene, Nelson, Erick, and Iris. Diana later moved to California as well where she was continuously surrounded with the love of her 5 children, 14 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. Diana was a God-fearing woman filled with light and joy everywhere she went. Her smile could light the darkest room and her laughter bellowed infecting everyone with her high spirit. A lover of life and spending long hours SHOPPING! She was the epitome of the classic old-fashioned lady, truly one of a kind. She is the greatest gift God has given us and we will cherish every lesson, every laugh, every smile, every memory shared.
