Tribute

José Ari Sarmento, 93, of Tracy, California, passed away on December 1st, 2022 in Tracy, CA unexpectedly. He was born in Prainha do Norte, Pico, Azores to José Luis Sarmento and Maria Ines Sarmento on January 26th, 1929. He married Candida Sarmento on May 17th, 1954 in Pico, Azores. He worked as a Marine Mechanic on a fishing boat named “Regina Maria” for over 10 years. Upon immigrating to the United States in 1969 at the age of 40 with his family he worked at various Dairies. He also worked and retired from Owens-Illinois, Inc. Glass Plant. He was a veteran of the Portuguese Army. He was involved with the I.P.F.E.S. Portuguese Club and a member of Saint Bernard’s Catholic Church.
José is preceded in death by his parents and all of his older five Sarmento siblings along with his two daughters. José is survived by his wife Candida Sarmento; his son’s Joe Sarmento, Jorge Sarmento, Ari Sarmento, John Sarmento (Wendy) along with his two daughters Maria Williams (Richard), Honoria Sarmento (David); Grandchildren, Christopher, Patricia, Jason (Pat), William, Joseph, Justin (Anjelica), Kayla, Jordan, and six great-Grandchildren and his devoted dog Ping Pong.
He along with his wife Candida of 68 years enjoyed their many travels throughout Europe, Azores, South America, Canada, England, Scotland, Greece, Russia, China, Thailand, Hong Kong and all the Baltic Countries along with cruises of the Mediterranean Sea. He enjoyed visiting family and friends, playing cards, and had an amazing green thumb in his beautiful gardens, tinkering in his workshop, helping family and friends with his talents as a craftsman.
He was such a loving and giving man who expressed his love and affection through his deeds to his family, friends and everyone he encountered in his daily travels. His smile always lit up a room along with his wonderful stories. There are not enough words to describe this man who is a great legacy to all of his family and friends. His wealth was not measured in monetary values, but in the way he touched all of our lives. He will be greatly missed, and will always be in our heart and minds.
