Dr. Kahler was born in Goodrich, North Dakota. Later, his family moved to the Sacramento, California, area where he grew up.
He graduated from Pacific Union College, near St. Helena, California, in 1959 with a B.A. degree. After that he graduated with an M.D. degree from Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California. Afterwards, he interned in Takoma Park, Maryland, and one year later, he served in the United States Airforce as a captain at McConnell Airforce Base in Witchita, Kansas.
After completing two years in the Airforce, he came to Tracy in 1967 and joined Tracy Medical Group where he practiced family medicine until 2001. He semi-retired and worked part-time for Tracy Urgent Care until 2012.
Leland had a love for animals and a passion for the outdoors that he passed on to his children, and instilled many fond memories with them as he enjoyed hobbies such as fishing, backpacking (Yosemite, and Sadler Lake), scuba diving, flying (to the Nut Tree for Sunday brunch), and snow skiing (at Kirkwood and Mammoth Mountain).
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Viola, and his children Philip (Antoinette) of Forest Grove, Oregon, Sheryl of San Francisco, California, and Jeffery (Sheilah) of Atascadero, California. He will be missed by his grandchildren, Jared, Gabrielle, Maddison, and Lucas.
Private services are planned for a later date at the veteran’s cemetery in Bakersfield, California.
