Ruth Evelyn was born on February 11, 1928 in Ottawa, Kansas to Jesse and Bessie Wire. She graduated from Argentine High School with the class of 1946.
Growing up, Ruth spent summers with family in California thanks to passes on the Santa Fe Railroad. One summer she met Howard Alcock, a local Tracy farm boy. Howard and Ruth were married at the Tracy First Methodist Church on November 30, 1947. For years they ran the family farm on Highway 33 in Tracy.
Ruth was very active in Tracy Women’s Club, Hospital Auxiliary, scouting, 4-H club and church activities. Howard and Ruth served as U.S. Peace Corps volunteers, with their daughters Mary and Elizabeth, in Liberia, West Africa from 1971 to 1973.
In 1977, the Alcock family moved to Solvang, California, where Ruth continued to be involved in community activities. Later, after Howard’s passing from ALS, she retired to the DeAnza Senior community in Santa Cruz in 1996. Ruth passed away at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz on November 6, 2017 at the age of 89.
Ruth is survived by four children, Alan Alcock of Oakdale, Robert Alcock of Santa Cruz, Mary Alcock Philis of Boulder Creek, and Elizabeth Alcock Bredall of Pacifica. Also, two son-in-laws, Troy Philis and Bill Bredall.
She is remembered by four grandchildren: Erin Hoops, Sarah Bredall, Mark Alan Bredall, and John Bredall. Also, two nieces: Jane Johnson Sonner and Karen Johnson Ritchie, and one nephew, David Johnson.
The day before Ruth died, she said, “I have a wonderful family. I have had a wonderful life. An interesting life.” A Graveside Service will be held at Tracy Public Cemetery on Thursday, November 30, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. on what would have been Howard and Ruth’s 70th wedding anniversary.
