Hirabhai P. Patel

March 28, 1928 ~ March 15, 2017 (age 88) 88 Years Old
Hirabhai P. Patel, lovingly called “Doc” by most and “HP” by some, passed away peacefully in Tracy on March 15, 2017, just a few days before his 89th birthday. He was surrounded by his family during this entire period and left this world saying and singing God's name.
Hirabhai was born in Kumbharia, Gujarat, India. He was brought up in the small town of Saroli by a middle-class farming family. His childhood was marked by a mixture of daily daunting struggles, moving determination, and aspirations to succeed through tireless efforts. He obtained a bachelor’s degree from Surat and went on to do his Master’s at UDCT in Mumbai. Shortly thereafter, he joined Atul, one of the most prestigious chemical, dye, and drug intermediate manufacturers in Asia. After a few years at Atul, and despite his financial adversity in 1961, he convinced his father and chose to pursue a PhD. He left for England on a ship, leaving behind a young family. In 1963, he completed his PhD in azo-compounds at the University of Sheffield, and soon returned back to Atul. Atul became his passion. He served the organization with extreme loyalty and dedication, always putting honesty and hard work ahead of any other virtues.
He married Jashumatiben in 1952 and lived an exemplary married life. He taught his family the value of unconditional love irrespective of educational status and earning abilities. He raised six of his own children and three nieces and nephews, and strongly believed in education as a key to success and happiness in life.
He led a simple life compared to his cohort, and spent all his resources towards the welfare of his extended family over his own personal interests. He was much loved and well respected when he reached the helm of his career as one of the top executives at Atul, a Lalbhai Company.
After his retirement, he came to the U.S to join his family. He transitioned to this new environment with speed and grace, making himself useful to family and immersing himself in spirituality
In spite of his loss of hearing and eyesight, he continued to enjoy life, and began deriving pleasures from the simplest in things. He spent the last 23 years in Tracy, where his family’s bond grew even stronger. Hirabhai was a magnet for the Patel/Punjya family.
He is survived by his wife, Jashumatiben, brother, Ranchodbhai, sister, Rukhiben, three daughters-in-law Bhagi, Uru, and Jayu, two sons-in-law Gordhabhai and Umesh, three daughters Ramila, Usha (Baku), and Niyanta (Dolly), three sons Sunil, Pravin, and Raju, eight grandchildren, Kuntal, Jignasha, Shivam, Meera, Nirali, Niraj, Shivani, and Dhruv, and, finally, three great-grandchildren.
