Joseph Francis Murphy
March 3, 1934 – July 10, 2017

Joe Murphy passed away on July 10th, 2017, at Atria Assisted Care facility where he had been residing in Novato, CA. Born in San Francisco on March 3, 1934, Joe spent his entire life as a native of Northern California, residing in San Francisco, South San Francisco, Pacifica, Novato and Tracy, before returning to Novato to be near his eldest son, Joseph Jr.

Joe graduated from Riordan High, and later received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of San Francisco. Joe worked at Pacific Telephone from the age of 19 in the mail room until his retirement as a legislative analyst nearly 40 years later. It was there that he met his Bride, June, whom he spent the next 52 plus years with before she predeceased him in 2008.

Joe and June raised 5 boys together: Frank, Jim, Joe, Tim and Mike. Joe was active in youth baseball as a coach, umpire and spectator, rarely missing one of his boys games. After moving to Tracy, the Murphy’s became active in the community where Joe and June volunteered as long term care ombudsman visiting nursing homes and residential care facilities for the elderly in Tracy and Manteca to advocate for patients’ rights. Joe then became active with the California Senior Legislature, representing San Joaquin County as a Senior Senator for over 20 years. He enjoyed representing the community and culminated his time there with the passing of the Silver Alert Program into law.

Joe is survived by his three sons Joseph Francis Murphy, Jr. (Iris), Timothy Lawrence Murphy (Lucie) and Michael Patrick Murphy (Lisa) as well as grandchildren Trent and Lauren.

A Prayer Service will be held on Wednesday, July 19, 2017, at 10:30 A.M. at Fry Memorial Chapel followed with burial at the Tracy Public Cemetery. In loving memory, please make donations to The California Senior Legislature http://4csl.org/, or any charity of your choice. For condolences to the family, please visit www.frymemorialchapel.com.
