Lucia Maria Morandini Hotmire
May 8, 1942 - March 31, 2017

Lucia Maria Morandini Hotmire of Tracy, Ca. passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loved ones on March 31, 2017, after a courageous fight with cancer. Lucia was born in Northern Italy on May 8, 1942 to Marcella Stefani and Ettore Morandini in Tezze di Grigno, Trento.
Lucia completed her high school at the Istituto Magistrale di Vicenza Italy, followed by a degree in Nursing Sciences in Milano, Italy. She met and married her husband, U.S. Army Major David W. Hotmire while working as a nurse at the United States Army S.E.T.A.F. clinic in Vicenza, Italy. After moving to the United States with her husband, they soon began a family. Lucia attended the Monterey Institute of Foreign Studies in California where she pursued International Studies and Literature. She was awarded a Humanity Division book grant for outstanding achievement. Lucia continued her studies, while also raising her children, Matthew and Stefani. Upon her husband's retirement from the army at Fort Ord, the family moved to Modesto, Ca. where she obtained her real estate license. After 25 years of marriage and the long illness and death of her husband, Lucia went back to school to earn a degree in Literature with Honors from the University of California, Santa Cruz where she was selected for Cowell College Honors and graduated in the top 5% of her class. It was during this time that Lucia and Vero found their way to each other’s hearts, and Lucia joined Vero in Tracy and the two became life companions.
Lucia was an impressive helpmate to her late husband in his career. She was an impeccable hostess. Her generous spirit and wry sense of humor left a mark on all who met her. She was a writer and a born storyteller, winning several awards because of her writing abilities, including awards in both poetry and storytelling. She was a remarkable, unpretentious cook who made elaborate meals that would leave a long lasting impression on others.
Lucia knew how to love and she gave unconditionally. Growing up, she kept her younger brothers and sisters, and numerous cousins enchanted with her stories, keeping them entertained for hours. Always involved in her children's education and activities, she made herself available in every aspect of their lives, from coaching soccer to chairing book fairs and committees. She did the same with her grandchildren, whom she adored and referred to as “the air she breathed”, and even volunteered in their Kindergarten classrooms as a teacher’s aide. She was free and generous with her love, and recognition was never important to her because she was secure in her generous heart.
Lucia is survived by her longtime companion of 25 years, Oliviero Oliveri, by her son, Matthew Hotmire and his wife Teresa, by her daughter, Stefani Payne and her husband, Jason, and by her five grandchildren whom she truly treasured: Marcus, Matteo, Alessandra, Brady and Aiden. She is also survived by her brothers Paolo Morandini and his wife Gabriella; Giorgio Morandini and his wife Marina; her sisters Maria Morandini, Francesca Bates and Chiara Ceron and husband Nando and her cherished nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition she leaves behind her extended family: Michael Oliveri and his son Giacomo, Eric Oliveri and his wife Jeanette and their daughters Gianna and Gessica.
Lucia leaves behind many friends and family with whom she shared the many ups and downs of life. She was loyal and protective towards all of her friends and family. Her smile and kindness was infectious. We will miss her deeply.
